Caroline Rees is President and Co-Founder of Shift, a non-profit organization with the mission to build a world in which business gets done with respect for people’s dignity and equality. Through her work, she champions the central importance of business respect for human rights to advancing sustainability, equality, ESG investing, stakeholder capitalism, and human and social capital. Her recent work has focused on strengthening social aspects of sustainability reporting as a reflection of, and catalyst for, effective human rights risk management; and improving the data and methods used to evaluate companies’ social performance as part of ESG analysis. Caroline was previously lead advisor to Professor John Ruggie in his role as the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative on Business and Human Rights, and was closely involved in the development of the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights. From 2009 to 2011, she was Director of the Governance and Accountability Program at the Harvard Kennedy School’s Corporate Responsibility Initiative. Caroline is a Commissioner on the Business Commission to Tackle Inequality.
